In which position should a patient be placed for a lumbar puncture?

For a lumbar puncture, the ideal position for the patient is the lateral recumbent position. This position allows for easier access to the lumbar spine, which is necessary for performing the procedure safely and effectively. When the patient is in the lateral recumbent position, they typically lie on their side with their knees drawn up toward their chest. This flexion of the spine opens up the spaces between the vertebrae, making it easier to insert the needle into the subarachnoid space to obtain cerebrospinal fluid.

Additionally, being in this position helps to minimize discomfort and reduces the risk of complications. It stabilizes the patient and provides a safer environment for both the healthcare provider and the patient during the procedure. Due to the anatomical considerations, this position is preferable over sitting upright, which may not provide adequate access, or supine, which can compress the spinal region and make the procedure more difficult. Lying prone is certainly not suitable since it obstructs access to the lumbar area entirely.
